The Sahuarita Mustangs ended their three-game road series Friday with a 28-14 loss to the Sabino Sabercats.
As has often been the theme of the 2018 season, the Mustangs faced yet again another “bigger, stronger, faster” team. Sahuarita didn’t seem to be intimidated by the size or the reputation of the Sabercats, and the game was much closer than the score indicates.
A vehicle fire on I-19 delayed the arrival of many Mustang fans. Many got there just in time to see the Sabercats tally their first score early in the second period, 7-0, with successful PAT. Some were just getting settled in their seats when they watched the Mustangs respond on the next drive when senior Tucker Leinen scored from three yards out. With the failed PAT, the 7-6 score would stand until halftime.
Sabino opened the second half stretching their lead to 14-6 at the 8:03 mark. Sahuarita’s opening drive stalled and Sabino would score again, 21-6, with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter.
Half way through the fourth quarter Sabino score again, 28-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, Cristian Gonzales found that open field he had been trying to find all night. With a full head of steam, Gonzales headed down the Sabino sideline, just past mid-field he broke several tackles enroute to a 90-yard dash to the end zone.
The Mustangs return home this Friday night to face Tanque Verde in the season finale on the SHS senior night.
