Local high school soccer teams opened the season Monday as part of the Brandon Bean Soccer Tournament.

Walden Grove girls and boys faced Cienega High School, with the girls losing, 3-1. Their lone score came on hotly contested header by Madison Mulkins, who was able get the ball into the net with Cienega’s goal keeper’s hands in her face. The boys lost a tough game, 3-2, after leading, 2-0, at halftime.

The Sahuarita girls played Sunnyside in the tournament, which continues this week. The Mustangs scored twice in the first half for a 2-0 victory. Freshman Rylee Arrington found the net on a cross from sophomore Lina Bracamonte. A few minutes later, junior Maddie Peters added a goal, also on a pass from Bracamonte. Freshmen Hayle Salcido and Mireya Colorado, sharing duties in goal, combined for the shutout.

The Mustangs controlled the game from the start but could not find the back of the net. SHS took 37 shots, with just 14 on goal. Of those 14, only two went in.
