The first wave of Sahuarita Police officers to be trained and equipped with body cameras have hit the streets.
As of Thursday, seven officers, two supervisors and the town’s animal control/community services officers are using the cameras on patrol and additional employees will be trained in the near future, SPD Commander Eddie Lopez said in a news release. Eventually, all uniformed personnel will be trained and equipped with the cameras.
Officers will not record all contacts and interactions, but they will record all traffic, pedestrian and enforcement contacts and criminal investigations, Lopez said. This technology will help officers with investigations and reports, and document interactions with the public.
Lopez called the cameras a “valuable tool” but warned they are not “a panacea as to knowing exactly what happened.”
“The SPD looks forward to utilizing the technology, but also recognizes its limitations,” Lopez said.
