U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered 33 people from Mexico and El Salvador hiding inside a trailer Tuesday night at the Interstate 19 checkpoint north of Tubac and arrested the driver on human smuggling charges.
Agents asked the driver of a Freightliner truck and trailer to submit to a secondary inspection and during that inspection, agents found 12 children ages 3-17, a pregnant woman and a convicted felon hiding along with several other people, according to a press release.
The interior of the trailer was nearly 100 degrees and even though the trailer was equipped with a refrigeration unit, the driver did not have it turned on.
The 37-year-old driver, a man from Mexico, was arrested and charged with felony human smuggling violations.
The 33 people being smuggled were taken into U.S. Border Patrol custody and will be processed for immigration violations.
