contract

Every industry has disreputable companies that will try to take advantage of you and, unfortunately, the heating and cooling industry is no different. There are ways to spot them, though, and stop them in their tracks before they take your hard-earned money.

Never pay upfront.

A reputable company will never ask you to pay in advance. If you do, there’s a chance you’ll never see them again. Don’t give anyone your credit card information until after the work is done and you’ve checked it.

Get estimates in writing.

Ask every company for an estimate of what the work will cost. The estimate should list what will be done and the costs for parts and service.

Get a second opinion.

Honest companies understand that you are protecting yourself by getting a second opinion from a different contractor. Reputable companies will be happy to provide a free second opinion.

Sign a contract.

A contractor should provide you with a contract that specifies what work will be done and at what cost. If there is any warranty for the work or parts, make sure that’s in the contract. Read the contract before you sign it and ask questions about anything that’s unclear.

Ask to see the old parts.

If a contractor says they replaced a part, ask to see it so you’ll know they actually did.
