Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator Sue Payne accompanied five members of Sahuarita’s Youth Advisory Council to Paradise Valley last Wednesday to take part in the annual League of Arizona Towns and Cities Conference.
Accompanying Payne were Holly Coleman, Brianna Melvin, Brittani Phillips, Clarissa Quering and Alexus Torrez.
Partnering with local pecan growers FICO to share information about the town, the theme of the booth was “We’re Nuts About Sahuarita.”
“It was wonderful; the girls learned a lot. We met with youth groups from other cities in Arizona and found out that the problems are pretty much the same for teens everywhere,” Payne said. “One thing we learned is that some communities have a teen center with a lounge and we came away aspiring to get one of our own.”
Organized by Heidi (Olsen) Wright and Lindsay (Riba) Horton, the Sahuarita High School class of 1998 had a grand reunion on July 12 at the El Charro Caf/ in Tucson.
In addition to dinner, a special highlight of the evening was classmate and magician Rodney Housley, who entertained with some of his slick, fool-the-eye tricks.
A number of awards given in jest were another high point of the evening. In the “Best Preserved” category, it was a near-tie between Abe Enochs and Shawn Hardaway, but in the end, Abe was the winner.
Mario Felix won in the “Least Recognizable” category and Tammy (Van Sickle) Woody and Alex Woody earned the “Marrying Your High School Sweetheart” award.
Greg Coppo, Rory Van Noy and Alex Woody each received an award for serving the country.
This coming Saturday there’s a Back-to-School Safety Fair at Club Rancho Sahuarita from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to fire and bike safety, the public event offers face painting and jumping castles for the kids.
On Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., there’s an open-to-the-public Resident Business Fair with entertainment.
Here’s our weekly reminder that today is Farmer’s Market day from 5-8 p.m. at the Town Hall Plaza.
In addition to some jewelry and artisan vendors, there’s fresh-from-the-field tomatoes, eggplant, onions, garlic, peaches, watermelon plus organic coconuts and mangoes. Scott and Denise Gilliland of Adventure Coffee Roasting offer organic and free-trade coffee, and other vendors fill the plaza with Mexican pastries, handmade breads, grass-fed and free-range beef, raw and unfiltered honey, local pecans and pistachios, barbeque sauce and homemade jams and syrups.
Come hungry and enjoy a Sonoran hot dog or delicious empanada. The past two Wednesdays, I had a delicious dessert empanada, then went home to have dinner — a delightful and possibly habit-forming switch!

Organized by Heidi (Olsen) Wright and Lindsay (Riba) Horton, the Sahuarita High School class of 1998 had a grand reunion on July 12 at the El Charro Caf/ in Tucson.
The event brought together 47 former classmates for a night of reminiscing and catching up on the past 10 years.
In addition to dinner, a special highlight of the evening was classmate and magician Rodney Housley, who entertained with some of his slick, fool-the-eye tricks.
